Home Repair, Maintenance, And Renovation

YOU CAN DO IT ALL YOURSELF

The Internet seems bent on putting all human knowledge online. And then intends to put it into a video tutorial. It will never succeed completely, of course, but I’m constantly amazed at the progress toward this goal. This do-it-yourself (DIY) site has videos with voiceovers explaining how to do everything from restoring a classic car to installing a toilet. Not to mention rag-rolling paint, making an occasional table, knitting, and scrapbooking.

If by some strange chance you want to perform a DIY project not covered here, you can put a request for a video on that topic into the Google search box. It’s probably out there somewhere.

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT YOUR HOUSE

This excellent site will tell you how to install a bathroom sink, clean your gutters, hire a contractor, install a water filter, childproof your home, and install new siding. And that’s just for starters. HOME TIPS has an amazing section on “How your house works.” Click on the outline of a house and up comes basic structural information on the part indicated! The handiest handyman will find useful information, and a non-handy person who’s home alone will find it a treasure trove.

HOW TO FIX JUST ABOUT ANYTHING

Perhaps you’d like to fix your TV, your digital camera, your truck, or even your chain saw. This site may be able to help. You submit your question to the site, including the make and model of the ailing equipment, and give details of the problem. Then you hope someone else with expertise in that area has the answer. Frequently someone does.

25 SKILLS EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE

I didn’t say this. POPULAR MECHANICS did. Number 2 skill, Protect Your Computer, is one you have, if you’ve been reading my newsletter for awhile. I got pretty far into the rest of the list without finding other skills I had, though I think I could start a campfire in the woods on a wet day if I had to. I am grateful to the men in my life who do have these skills. I’m not sure any man has them all, though.
